Darth Sidious did not carry two lightsabers out of necessity. He carried two out of philosophy.
They were not identical, and that was entirely by design.
Darth Sidious's Rose Gold Lightsaber Hilt
The first saber was elegant and warm — its rose gold hilt almost aristocratic, the kind of weapon that invited underestimation. Sidious constructed it during his early Chancellorship years, when the mask of Palpatine still needed to be maintained absolutely. It was a politician's blade. Beautiful, deceptive, and built to make opponents hesitate just long enough.
It was the blade he chose the night Mace Windu came to arrest him.
That choice was calculated. The rose gold saber's final purpose was never to win the fight outright — it was to draw Windu into the precise moment of moral crisis Sidious had engineered decades in advance. When it tumbled out into the Coruscant night, he let it fall without mourning. It had done exactly what it was built to do. It was the last lie Palpatine the Chancellor ever told.

The second saber was something else entirely. Black and chrome, cold and severe — there was nothing senatorial about it. No warmth. No deception. This was the blade of Darth Sidious with every mask removed, built for moments when pretense was no longer useful.
He kept it in reserve for twenty years, waiting.
When Yoda arrived in the Senate chamber, Sidious felt something close to genuine anticipation. There was no manipulation to be done here. No architecture to collapse. This was simply two sides of the Force stripped to their essence, with the fate of the galaxy between them. He ignited the dark blade in silence and met the ancient Master without another word.
What Became of Them
The rose gold saber was never recovered — swallowed by the endless depths of Coruscant's lower levels, a fitting end for a weapon built entirely on deception.
Sidious kept the dark saber. It was the Emperor's blade now, and the Emperor had no more use for masks.
